The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
