Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
