Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, causing him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
