Sheffield Wednesday Confronts Major Issues, States Football Regulator

'We will play a key role in football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The team's current difficulties are seen as a "serious issue" and the football regulator is looking to gain the ability to look into club affairs in comparable cases, its new chair the official has declared.

Through a comprehensive talk, Kogan, who was named to the position this week, voiced concern towards the club's followers.

The regulator engaged with four supporter groups associated with the Championship side in recent days.

The football club have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in the current year, with the club failing to pay players on time on five separate occasions, including in September.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a serious issue for football authorities and a substantial concern for English football," Kogan told.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the great brands for English football and in recent days we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will allow us to have Wednesday and comparable cases submitted for our review if they require examination and addressed."

Financial Struggles and Ownership Situation

Wednesday's embattled owner Dejphon Chansiri indicated in the summer he would be willing to sell up at the stadium, but he has failed to complete a sale with interested parties.

Failure to pay player wages on time in spring months resulted in restrictions being imposed by the football authorities in mid-year, preventing the club from carrying out any transfers or loans for the following recruitment periods, although those limitations were removed in late summer.

Authority's Position

Kogan said: "The position was created for the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where fans are dedicated to a local institution that has been part of their lives in multiple situations.

"I completely understand the team's plight, as I do for each organization that in modern times have encountered failure, or been close to going to the wall, for causes separate from the supporters."

Questioned about whether the oversight body could require an owner to sell a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the regulator answered: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we collect the information and understand the situation, we will."

But the regulator clarified that forcing owners to sell clubs would be considered the final option and the oversight body would choose to cooperate with proprietors.

"The last thing what we want to do is commence engagement with an particular organization, an specific proprietor, without being in a position to cooperate with that chairman to fix the challenges confronting the team and the owner's facing," Kogan said.

"However, realistically, when you look back over the history of the sport, over the recent generations there have been particular chairmen, few in number, but particular people who have shown negligence in the approach they have taken toward their clubs and ultimately decline to assume obligation for the future."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

Kogan met with representatives from 110 clubs to detail the scope of the regulator on Wednesday and maintained it represented a "proactive meeting" with a "significant participation" from the National League to the Premier League.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if we get it wrong, if the world of football gets it wrong, the extraordinary progress that's been made necessary will vanish incredibly quickly," Kogan said.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the terms of English football is a huge success story - we need to continue the progress.

"There's an enormous amount of money flowing into the game and has been channeled for the last 20 or 25 years, because certainty is lacking it will persist in entering the game, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to take a really clear view on potential dangers and naturally, of the next two or three years."

Top Flight Apprehensions

The Premier League opposed the formation of an authority because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the Premier League's sporting equality, but the chairman responded: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an financial organization of the elite league.

"I of all people understand the worry about compromising the division as a high-quality offering of England. But at the same time, if you engage with division representatives after this week's discussion, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, actually, they have been informing us confidentially they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

Kogan is still facing a "full inquiry" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he disclosed making donations to the political party in 2020.

The 68-year-old provided financial support for Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the regulator explained.

"I am no longer involved in any type of partisan engagement."
