The moment is ripe to change Manchester United's system - the manager declares.

Manchester United players ahead of a match
Man Utd skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple senior stars to miss the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle.

Head coach Ruben Amorim contends that switching Man Utd's formation due to external noise would have signaled "the finish" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his trademark back three setup with wing-backs and instead field an orthodox back four with two holding midfielders.

By his own admission this ultimately functioned as a six-man defensive block in the final minutes as his side dug in for a crucial result - securing just their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Although he once famously said that not even the highest authority could pressure him to change his system, Amorim asserts the capacity to play with different setups has always been part of his long-term vision.

Yet, he clarifies he could only alter the tactics when his team were faring sufficiently well - otherwise it would appear as if he was giving in to external pressure.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I recognized perhaps I don't have the personnel to excel in that formation, but it was the start of a journey," he said.

"The goal was to build an identity. Now is a separate juncture. We are missing a full complement of personnel, and we must be flexible, so they see the reason we are changing.

"It is not because of the demands of journalists, or the supporters.

"Whenever media talk about altering the formation constantly, I cannot make a change because the squad will believe I'm changing because of you and I believe that is a disaster for the coach.

"Once we are performing strongly in our system, then is the moment to evolve.

"We are going to develop into a more complete side because when all the players return, we are not planning to play with a back three exclusively."

Availability Challenges Loom Large

With just two wins in their last eight outings prior to defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is correct to claim his side have been in good form.

He is, however, operating with a severely stretched squad, with multiple first-team players already confirmed absent for the forthcoming fixture against winless Wolves.

That figure will increase if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to shake off the injury that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will miss the Wolves match, despite the fact he is reportedly pushing his manager to allow him to make a comeback after his muscle injury.

"Fernandes is already saying he needs to practice," revealed Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. Definitely not. You can write that."

The Captain's Influence Endures

However, the Portuguese star will likely continue to be heavily involved, as whereas most injured players watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was observed keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his leader to carry on providing input.

"He is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's constantly speaking. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"There are flaws at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. Even after he recovers, he goes to watch the other guys practicing. There are a lot of things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he wants my job or not, but he's a born leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Timeline for Key Personnel

While the specific date for the captain's comeback - and that of other injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, before the conclusion of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
