Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for an F1 team – after the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure in September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
